Make the most of your Detroit Lakes family photos! Our 3-part session approach follows kids’ energy, explores fun locations, and captures joyful moments.

Getting Ready for Your Session
Before your session, consider your outfit, props, and comfortable walking shoes. As a Detroit Lakes family photographer, most of my sessions are outdoors, and a little adventurous, so comfy shoes are always a great idea.
Bring anything that feels like your family: blankets, favorite toys, a book, or a snack to keep energy up.
Tip: I love turning our session into a bit of an adventure. Sometimes we explore multiple locations, wander down a trail, or follow the kids where they’re happiest.

Part 1 – Full Family Smiles (Detroit Lakes Family Photography)
We usually start with everyone together, smiling at the camera. These classic poses are perfect for framed photos (think great gifts for Grandma to hang on her wall!) and holiday cards. As the classic ‘must have’ photo, I find it essential to get it done right away in the session when everyone is fresh.
Flexible note: If the kids aren’t quite ready, we might switch things up—play a little, explore, or start with props—and circle back when they’re warmed up. The goal is happy, natural smiles, not forced ones.

Part 2 – Groupings & Individuals
This part captures each child individually, siblings together, and kids with each parent. I personally love these photos, and the kids usually do too! Such a special moment for them to be in the spotlight. Don’t forget to print and frame these images as well. These are likely the photos that will get the kids excited to return for photos again next year.
Kid-first note: As a Minnesota family photographer, I’ve learned that kids are happiest when they can move, explore, and be themselves.
I follow the kids’ energy, so in addition to smiling at the camera, some shots may be taken while they’re moving or exploring a favorite spot. The best moments often happen when kids are relaxed and having fun, not when they’re “posed.”

Part 3 – Fun, Adventure-Style Family Photos Embracing Minnesota
My favorite part of the session. Walking, running, playing, and using props like blankets, picnic snacks, or even a ball. If you’re up for it, we may go on a mini-hike or adventure across multiple locations. If it’s in season, we may also explore the flower field at the end of the session.
Some of my favorite games to play include twirling, walking as a family, and having the kids sneak up on mom and dad.
Adventure note: This is where the most candid, joyful, and real moments happen: the laughter, the curiosity, the connection that shows your family’s personality.

The Result
By the end of the session, you’ll have a mix of posed and playful images that tell your family’s story. Every family is different, and that’s what makes these sessions so special. We capture real memories you’ll treasure forever.
Come for the smiling at the camera and the Christmas card photo, and leave with a gallery of images full of smiles, wiggles, and all the little moments that make your family yours.
