I loved working with Carmen on her Artist headshot session to promote her art exhibit. Carmen’s Wicked Plant collection was exhibited in November 2024 in Omaha, Nebraska.
Lifestyle Headshot Session vs. Branding Session Packages
If you’ve been hanging around the blog for a while, you are probably used to hearing me talk about branding sessions. Carmen’s session was the ‘Lifestyle Headshot’ package, a great intro package if you are not quite ready for the complete brand photography experience. Lifestyle headshots are the same quality photos as any other session, but the session time is shorter, and we go through an abbreviated version of the planning process.
Artist Headshot Session Goals
Our Goals for the session included:
- Capturing the classic artist headshot that Carmen can use on social media and for promotions.
- Photographing Carmen with the art collection to be featured at the upcoming exhibit.
- A third extra, if we had a time goal, was to capture some images that bring the viewer into the artist’s workroom, imagining what it is like for these pieces to come together.
Our Biggest Challenge
The big challenge of the session was creating a photo capturing the whole essence of the collection. We didn’t include every piece due to lack of space, but just enough to give the viewer an idea of what to expect from this art collection. Before landing on the final product, we tried two different background options and several layout strategies. Our patience as we put together the art puzzle paid off.
Now, let’s flip the mic and hear from Carmen and what she thought of the lifestyle headshot photography process.
What was your favorite part about planning the branding session?
The branding session helped me focus on what we could and (probably) could not accomplish in the amount of time available. It was helpful for brainstorming and also in setting expectations.
What is your favorite part of your new brand photos?
Being in front of a camera is not my favorite activity. At the very end of the session, Amber announced that we were done, but she kept her camera poised to capture the look of accomplishment (and relief) on my face. It’s one of my favorite shots.
How have these photos impacted your business?
These brand photos make me look like I have my act together, even though I don’t always feel that way. It’s definitely a boost to the professional ego.
Did we accomplish your brand photography visual/photo goals? What was your favorite part about working together?
The main goal for this photo shoot was to capture the essence of my latest Wicked Plants mixed media collection, premiering at the Omaha Botanical Gardens in October 2024. Goal accomplished!
I appreciate Amber’s eye for capturing the details we wanted…and omitting the ones we didn’t. I had an idea of what I thought would look best for the photo shoot. Amber offered an extra, alternate approach, which proved to be the winner!
Overall, what do you have to say about the branding photography experience?
As a marketing consultant (in addition to being an artist) I understand the importance of having content (such as fresh photos) ready to best take advantage of opportunities as they arise. It’s the one thing many solopreneurs are reluctant to do, but this one small investment can pay for itself in so many ways.
