Meet Amber

If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ve probably heard me talk about golden hour—that dreamy time of day just after sunrise or before sunset when the light is soft, warm, and totally magical. But why exactly is it the best time for your family photos? Let’s dive in!

This golden hour family session in a Minnesota field gave us the dreamiest light and sweetest smiles.

That Glowy, Magical Light

Golden hour light wraps around you like a warm hug—it’s flattering, soft, and gives everything this romantic, glowing look. Harsh midday sun can create strong shadows and cause squinting, but during golden hour, the light is diffused and gentle. It smooths skin tones and makes colors pop—hello gorgeous family portraits!

A More Relaxed Vibe

There’s something about this time of day that just feels more peaceful. Whether we’re shooting in an open field, in your backyard, or by the lake, golden hour adds a calm, cozy atmosphere to your photos. That relaxed feeling shows in your expressions, which makes your photos feel more authentic and connected.

Nature at Its Best

In Minnesota, we’re blessed with beautiful natural backdrops—think wildflower fields, glowing grasses, and sunlit trees. During golden hour, these scenes come alive. The light dances through the leaves, highlights textures, and creates beautiful depth in your photos. It’s honestly like Mother Nature turns up the volume on beauty for just a little while.

Real Client Examples

Here are a few of my favorite golden hour family photos from past sessions. You can see the difference that dreamy light makes—skin glows, eyes sparkle, and the whole scene feels like it’s straight out of a storybook.

Planning Your Golden Hour Family Photos in MN

Golden hour changes with the seasons, so the exact timing varies throughout the year. In the summer, we may be shooting as late as 8pm, while fall sessions start closer to 5 or 6pm.

If you’re dreaming of glowy, joy-filled family portraits, golden hour is absolutely worth it. These images are the ones you’ll print big, frame, and treasure forever.
